The man accused of gunning down a three-year-old girl while she played on the playground is scheduled to appear in a Wayne County courtroom Thursday.
Derrick Best, 29, of Goldsboro, faces murder charges in the February 27 killing of Princess King. The child was an innocent bystander, and police say the intended target was a man Best was fighting with.
Best was on the run for two and a half weeks before a tip from America's Most Wanted led to his dramatic arrest. After a lengthy standoff, U.S. Marshals found Best hiding in a Greenville apartment.
If convicted, Best faces a maximum of life in prison plus 400 months. The death penalty could be used in this case.
