Troopers say the owner of a gas station and wrecker service died in an accident that closed a major highway in Onslow County Wednesday afternoon.
The Highway Patrol says the accident happened around 2:00 p.m on Highway 258, between Jacksonville and Richlands in front of Eastern Outfitters.
Traffic on the five-lane highway was backed up for miles.
Troopers say a red pickup truck was heading south went it went left of center and the vehicle went sideways. It struck an oncoming work pickup truck with five people inside.
The Highway Patrol say Gene Sanders of Richlands, the driver of the red truck, was airlifted to New Hanover Regional Medical Center and later died.
Four people in the work truck were taken to Onslow Memorial Hospital with serious injuries, while troopers say a fifth person in that truck refused treatment.
All lanes of the highway were shut down for more than an hour because of the crash.
