Human remains found inside a charred car last month still have not been identified by the medical examiner's office putting the investigation into the death at a standstill.
Martin County Sheriff Dan Gibbs says investigators are waiting for the results before they can move forward on the case.
On January 13th deputies were called to an abandoned home off old Williamston Road near Everetts where they found the car and the remains inside. Gibbs says they know who the car belongs to, but will not release that information.
Now that more than a month has passed since the discovery, people in the community are concerned the person in the car was murdered and a killer is still on the loose. Sheriff Gibbs says, "We're concerned about the situation too, and we want to get down to it as quick as possible, but we have to wait on other people for the results you know, to help us in the investigation."
Sheriff Gibbs says he's not sure if it'll take a few more weeks or even another month before the medical examiner's results are in. He says investigators will know how to proceed with the case once the remains are identified.
