Homeowners in Beaufort County still suffering flood damage after Hurricane Irene have a chance to get help rebuilding their homes with federal and state dollars.

Beaufort County residents interested in learning the intricacies of how they can qualify for the funds will have their chance Thursday night at the Chocowinity fire house at 7:00 p.m.

Anyone that has lived in coastal eastern carolina long enough has probably seen a home mitigation project where the home is raised above the flood plane. Applications are currently being accepted for a chance at qualifying for a 100% assistance in raising a persons home at risk for flooding. Emergency Management Director John Pack says qualifying for the help has a lot to do with cost benefit.

"We have engineers and other people that will get involved in it if it meets what is called a benefit cost ratio-because it's got to be worth the money-the federal government is putting into it for the house to be elevated," said Pack.

If people don't qualify for raising, they may still qualify for having the home bought at a negotiated market rate. The county will then destroy the home- preventing anyone from building on the flood prone land again.
