A staple of one downtown city in the east, and a symbol of small business staying-power, celebrated it's expansion with a ribbon cutting Friday.

Stewart's Jewelry Store, which opened back in 1908, celebrated with area officials, employees, and customers at its store on Market Street in downtown Washington in Beaufort County. Third generation owner and president Betty Stewart says that the business expanded into what had been a storage room.

"It takes honesty, and integrity, and hard work and believing that people will shop with you; believing in your customers. My dad always called our customers our finest gems," said Stewart.

"It's clear to everybody in these tough economic times that small business is the key and the backbone of America. It's no different here in Washington. So Stewart's and enterprises that can expand through these economic times and over 100 years or so -- wow what a phenomenal story! We're excited about it." said Washington Mayor Archie Jennings.

The expansion, complete with the original ceiling is the only one in the businesses104 years.
