UHS Officially Becomes Vidant

University Health Systems of Eastern Carolina officially became Vidant Health Wednesday.

The name change, which has been hotly debated by the public, took effect with new signs going up at the many hospitals and facilities in the East under the Vidant umbrella.

Pitt County Memorial Hospital is now Vidant Medical Center.

Vidant Health Chief of Operations, Dave McRae says, "The name is important, it's symbolic, regardless of the name, it's about the people, that built this hospital and system, the system of care for the whole region."

Vidant Medical Center President Steve Lawler says, "We've moved from being a county hospital to a world class medical center that first and foremost cares for our county and the people in Pitt county, but also has a responsibility to the eastern third of NC too."

Why does everyone refer to Belk as "Belk's"?? There is no "'s". Do you say Wal Mart's or Target's? It's BELK people!!!

For those that have suggested that Vidant is "private" please read; The Hospital is the flagship teaching hospital for the University Health Systems of Eastern Carolina and is affiliated with the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University.

It's hard to beleive the growth that has taken place in Greenville. There are so many building and medical facilities going up so fast that the health care is being administered carelessly.I was at the hospital today and can tell you , it was a "mess" and the literal changes on paper forms and the computer were handled poorly.I also was at ER and which is the worst place anyone could go East of Raleigh unless you're dying. There were people leaving and going to others ER.Has anyone noticed the growth surrounding the hospital, but the parking lot for the ER hasn't changed in 20 plus years ! The ER services need to be revamped and more doctors staffed in this area.

If people would quit using the _EMERGENCY dept as their Primary Doctor.. again EMERGENCY.. so your ingrown toenail, the cough you have had for a day and the stomach cramping don't really qualify.

".....world class medical center?" Yeah, if you think the world begins and ends in G'ville. PCMH has come a long way, but not "world class." Maybe "regional class."

I wonder if the backlash was the same when "The Eastern Reflector" became "The Daily Reflector"?

My uncle caught a staph infection after a simple disc procedure from this "advanced medical center" around 10 years ago and we buried him 3 months later... My father needed a steriod injection in his knee for arthritis and ended up with an E-Coli... I will never support this hospital no matter what the name...

The hospital was fine like it was back when I was born there (Pitt Memorial Hospital or PCMH)... The new name only shows that this group wants to actually be thought of in the same conversation as other hospitals west of Greenville, but we all know that will never the case...
