Columbia University researchers suggest the dramatic rise in childhood asthma over the past 30 years may be linked to the chemical Bisphenol-A, better known as BPA.
BPA is a component of plastic found in canned goods, store receipts and, until recent years, baby bottles. A new study tracked BPA levels in the urine of over 500 children during early childhood.
After adjusting for other risk factors, researchers found that even routine, low doses of exposure to BPA after birth were associated with higher rates of wheezing and asthma by age five.
