Spray Tans Might Not Be Safer Than Sunbathing

Many people get spray tans to avoid the health hazards of sunbathing, but a new study shows the faux tan may not be a safer alternative.

Dermatologist Dr. Leyda Bowes explained that a new study shows the compounds found in spray tans can cause mutations in cells and promote the development of cancers when inhaled.

Dr. Bowes said the compound dihydroxy-acetone could affect the lungs and other organs. The study involved live cells and organisms but not actual humans.

Dr. Bowes said individuals who get spray tans should wear protective undergarments, masks and goggles.
