Religious Groups Object To Covering Birth Control

Catholic hospitals say they're dismayed that President Barack Obama's health care law may force them to cover birth control free of charge to their employees.

The Catholic Health Association provided critical support last year for passage of the law, defying the bishops to do so. A provision in the law expands preventive benefits for women, and the administration is requiring that birth control with no copays be included.

But Sister Carol Keehan says a proposed conscience exemption is so narrowly written it applies only to houses of worship. Keehan is president of the umbrella group representing more than 600 hospitals.

It's not just Catholic hospitals. Educational and charitable organizations of any faith may not qualify for the exemption.

Obama administration officials say they are open to considering alternatives.

Maybe someone should include in this article the right-wing conservative who also want to eliminate the "pill".

The lies the catholic church has told and the influence they have had over condom use in Africa is responsible for many, many AIDS-related, completely preventable deaths. The catholic church actively tries to cover up the many cases of child rape committed by their ministers and clergy. They attempt to use their "charity" as a smokescreen to show they aren't all bad, but anyone with a brain knows you don't have to believe in God of follow a religious dogma to be a good, charitable person. Is there any question that the catholic church is more of a force of evil in the world than good?

Funny how everyone is so quick to condemn what the Catholic Church believes, but screams "First Amendment" when it is the other way around. If you don't believe in their position, because of your own hatred and ignorance- fine. But, that still does not give the government the right to meddle in their affairs. Turn it around. If the Catholic Church dictated to Congress that there would be prayer in schools, would that be okay? If you answer "no" then you have to give the Church the same rights you demand, unless you are a hypocrite.

The government is not making anyone take birth control, it is just making it available for those who want it-that leaves individuals free to make up their own minds!

Isn't it funny how the same people oppose sex education, oppose birth control, oppose abortion... but once the unwanted baby is born, they turn around and oppose food stamps for the mother, oppose welfare, oppose unemployment... are you pro-life or anti-life? Or does life stop mattering once you're born? We have a population problem. Humans are hard-wired for sex, they're not gonna stop because of future problems. Birth control is an acceptable solution from science. If you believe in a higher power, consider a divine solution to the population, it's been mentioned in the comments already. Think about it! Either your intelligent creator just likes a bit of variety, as Morgan Freeman suggested in Robin Hood, or He sees a problem with 10 billion people on this planet at some near point in the future.

Exactly, and population control in the past was "aided" with disease and famine. Science has helped eliminate those; therefore, it only make sense to use other more humane methods.

With Catholic establishments around the country covering up the behavior and crimes of their pedophile priests and now accepting gay marriage and gay priests...who cares about their stance on birth control!
