President Obama Has Kicked His Smoking Habit

President Barack Obama finally has kicked the habit, Michelle Obama said Tuesday.

"Yes, he has," the first lady told reporters at the White House when asked whether her husband had finally done what millions of Americans can't seem to do and quit smoking. "It's been almost a year."

She said she didn't know exactly when he quit "because he never smoked a lot" and she never saw him light up.

The issue of Obama's smoking last surfaced in December, when press secretary Robert Gibbs was asked about it and said he hadn't seen Obama smoke in nine months. That would have put Obama's final puffs somewhere in March.

At the time, Gibbs stopped short of asserting that the president had quit outright. But the president's wife was a bit more direct Tuesday.

"He's always wanted to stop," the first lady said, explaining that daughters Malia, 12, and Sasha, 9, are getting to an age where he wants to be able to look them in the face and deny it should they decide to ask him whether he smokes.

Mrs. Obama said the process of quitting has been a "personal challenge" for the president who, when questioned about it in June 2009, acknowledged that he often sneaked an occasional puff.

"I constantly struggle with it," Obama said. "Have I fallen off the wagon sometimes? Yes. Am I a daily smoker, a constant smoker? No."

Obama said he didn't smoke in front of his kids or his family, and had declared himself "95 percent cured." But he acknowledged then that there still were times "where I mess up."

"Once you've gone down this path, then it's something you continually struggle with," he said.

Mrs. Obama said Tuesday that she was very proud of her husband, but that she hasn't pressed him for details.

"I haven't really poked and prodded him on this," she said. "When somebody's doing the right thing you don't mess with them."

He has no incentive to stop lying "OSOC". It has worked very well for him so far. The media are a bunch of lapdogs who refuse to expose his lies and the American people have proven to be some of the most ignorant on earth, so they eat those lies up and get trembles down their legs. Besides he only claims to be Christian, alot of people claim to be but are anything but. A secular humanist has no convicting creed, faith nor standard to keep him from telling lies. A muslim could lie and say he was Christian to accomplish a goal of islam. They are allowed in their false religion to lie freely to anyone other than other muslims. Who knows what moral compass he has....if he has one at all. It certainly appears to anyone not mesmerized by his forked tongue that he has no morals, only self interest and the advancement of communism/socialism.

i dissagree with his politics. i think he is a racist and a secular humanist. However, this is a positive thing. Smoking kills. Congrats Mr. President. I only hope you are unemployed after the 2012 election.

Now thats funny, Osoc calling someone a pathological liar. I guess he heard it on Fox news. Even when the Prez does something positive and inspiring, this guy finds criticism, just goes to show how open minded and fair he is. It's called bias, selfish, narrow minded, prejudice,....

I'm asking myself why this is news worthy? OH... because this is the MOST POSITIVE THING he has done since taking office. Okay, I get it now.

Too bad he can't kick his frivilous spending habit. Now they want to waste billions on a monorail system so we can be more like Europe. You left wingnuts are a cancer to this country!

Why can't the critics just say, "Good job, Mr. President" instead of complaining about something unrelated to the story. The man quit smoking and that's something that he can pat himself on the back about. How many of you have tried to quit and be unsuccessful? Maybe that's the problem, you're jealous that he did it and you can't.

To anonymous@ 10:49 am And the only reason poor, working, bigoted red necks DIDN'T vote for him is because he is black-as your post proves!

Obama didn't write or publish this story. If you think it is silly, why not criticize the news source instead of him? I can't believe you are slamming him for quitting smoking-you people are really desparate for something to gripe about! Why not read the Lee article-that's something to criticize!

He probably kicks the habit every night when he goes to sleep.
