PCMH Name Change On Hold Because Of Trademark Troubles

Pitt County Memorial Hospital will stay that way for a little while longer.

The largest hospital in Eastern Carolina announced last month that on October 1st it would change its name to UHS Medical Center. But another UHS, Universal Health Services in Pennsylvania, has trademarked the UHS initials. The hospital said Universal has complained to PCMH about the planned usage, saying University Health Systems has never used the UHS brand.

So the hospital is putting its name change on hold. They hope to have a unique name, and creating a simpler brand that's easier to recognize within the next 90 days.

University Health Systems will continue to use that name, but not the initials.

What a bunch of tools on this thread. 1) if you dont like PCMH medical services than GO SOMEHWERE ELSE. Want to go to Dook? First make sure you have first class-premium health insurance or you will be barred at the door. 2) "Pitt County Hospital" is archaic and sounds backwoods/hokie. The medical center and Brody have grown and matured and are seeking to establish a regional if not national reputation for excellence in patient care, research and teaching. Holding on to this name PCMH for some ignorant sense of nostalgia is irrational and counterproductive towards the facility(ies) mission. The fault in the UHS name rights lies with the Pennsylvania company for making the bother to fuss and argue over rights over a three-letter acronym from a facility in an entirely different region of the country.

No, its more like a cancer spreading throughout eastern NC. UHS is nothing more than a factory, the bottom line is more important than the patient.

No, I'm pretty sure that patient satisfaction is above and beyond the national average, and that UHS has award winning and nationally recognized programs. If you feel you can do better or if you have any constructive advice, please feel free to submit it through appropriate channels.

You must be the .001 percent of people who aren't completely satisfied with service at UHS.

I'm in that percent too! Thank God for Duke University Hospital! I think the name should be Octopod Health Systems. UHS is like an octopus gaining control of every healthcare institution in eastern NC.

To Anonymus, As always there has to be someone that shoots off at the mouth about something they know nothing about. The Lawyers did their job months ago and this company had no problems then. This has not been a problem for Years. It's simple. Once University Health Systems became so large it just happens this other company decided to excercise their rights. This happens all the time.

True, but dont start blaming the ENTIRE hospital for the mistake of ONE person. I agree completely that whoever was doing the research should have gone further but really...its not the people who everyone is blaming. (the so called "higher ups")

So glad it is on hold due to proprietary reasons. I find it quite humorous due to coming from such a small meager Pitt County Hospital in the old building (I even had surgery there). Another fine example of UHS East (PCMH) not doing their homework. I still believe a slap in the face given the history and where it came from. Wish Dave McRae would think about this, but hey, he will soon leave with his GREAT retirement leaving the employees in the dust. Have to just say BAAAHHAAHAAA to you execs who think you can do no wrong! Gotcha!

No, we haven't ordered letterhead. No, our raises and bonuses aren't "paying" for the mistake. "If it's not broken just leave it alone" --- way to advance into our future! I'd rather have PCMH (whatever the new name is) moving forward...not stuck in the past. Can I just say, there are a bunch of HATEFUL people who post on this site. I am a proud PCMH employee...I watch people every day strive to give the best care, SAVE patients' money, and work hard to progress into the future. I know our new name will be great and for all you hateful people, go work somewhere else!

It would be nice if everyone would stop bashing PCMH and actually recognize how lucky we are to not only have a major medical center in our back yard, but one that has grown into a larger system of hospitals, physician practices, home health, hospice, ambulatory surgery, and a wound clinic. The "tower" at least has a vision and wants to continue this success so that the people of Eastern NC have the care they need east of I95. What is wrong with competing in the East with other branded health systems like Carolina Health System or Novant. Seeing posts from obvious PCMH employees makes me sick because they can't even look outside themselves long enough to be thankful to have a stable job with decent salary. Most people have not gotten raises of any kind in this economy.....look around people! And it is not like UHS is a new name, just never branded as such so quit wining about due diligence. They were looking to sustain the current name into a recognizable brand across the east.

Seriously people...Shut up. get over yourself and off your high and mighty horse. yeah, someone may have not checked good enough, but at least it was CAUGHT before. Things happen, and Im pretty dang sure you couldnt do the job. ZIP IT.

Nice due diligence folks. Let's give everyone in The Tower a raise! (Better step up parking enforcement against employees to pay for this latest blunder.)
