Obama Amends Birth Control Policy Amid Religious Concerns

President Barack Obama declared Friday he's found a solution that will protect religious liberty but also ensure that women have access to free birth control, as he rushed to defuse an election-year political uproar that threatened to overtake his administration.

Capping weeks of growing controversy, Obama announced he was backing off a newly announced requirement for religious employers to provide free birth control coverage even if it runs counter to their religious beliefs. Instead, workers at such institutions will be able to get free birth control coverage directly from health insurance companies.

"Religious liberty will be protected and a law that requires free preventative care will not discriminate against women," Obama said in a brief appearance in the White House briefing room.

"I understand some folks in Washington want to treat this as another political wedge issue. But it shouldn't be. I certainly never saw it that way," Obama said. "This is an issue where people of good will on both sides of the debate have been sorting through some very complicated questions."

Its not the governments job to provide women with birth control, it is your own darn RESPONSIBILITY to get it.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexico’s Roman Catholic Church drew fire Tuesday for releasing a set of voting “guidelines” for the faithful ahead of the July 1 presidential elections. All religious groups in Mexico are banned from engaging in electoral politics, or supporting or opposing any candidate or party. The guidelines published by the Archdiocese of Mexico on its web site appear to closely skirt the restriction. But the issue is a sensitive one in Mexico, where harsh anti-clerical laws sparked the 1926-1929 Cristero war, an uprising by Roman Catholic rebels against Mexico’s secular government in which tens of thousands of people died. While loosened in the 1990s, many restrictions on church activities in Mexico remain. The latest “pastoral guidelines” do not mention any party, saying only that Catholics cannot “choose as a political option those who support or promote false rights or liberties that attack the teachings contained in the Holy Scriptures, tradition and doctrine of the Church.” That appeared to be a reference to gay marriage and abortion rights, both of which the church has hotly opposed. The guidelines also say Catholics “should be alert to the commitments of the candidates and their parties to respect the foremost of all rights, which is the right to life, from the moment of conception.”

This bill says that you have to cover birth control. This should be a non issue if these catholic women live by the bible. The catholic church does not believe in birth control. Our government says that birth control has to be covered not taken. Distite what OSOS says no one will be forcing birth control on anyone who doesn't want it.

Read the bill, Catholics will have to pay for it and offer it to employees so don't hang you hat on anything. This also includes abortive drugs, although, the left tells you not to focus on that point since abortions are more upsetting to catholics than BC pills. This non compromise just got Obama thrown out of the whitehouse. If he thinks that forcing unconstitutional laws on christians is right, its our right to let him know what we think of him in 2012. Count em up, over 70 million catholics, 17 million hispanics and the protestants that object to this law....wow. He threw Jews under the bus and now this. Seems you great president is dumb as a bag of hammers.....are you still in that bag?

YOU read it! The compromise states that the insurance companies will pay for it! It DOES have to be offered to be fair to women-I know that is a hard pill to swallow for Republicans. BUT, the Catholic institution will not pay for it! Keep in mind, church were NEVER required to offer it. They are even exempt from religious and sexual discrimination in hiring-They can hire based on religion and sex! The Bount bill wants to allow ANY company who does not want to offer certain coverage to opt out for ANY reason! For example, Blount says if a company decides they don't think chemotherapy is appropriate for Cancer, they can deny it! ie, Blount does not want employers to have to cover ANY health care! That is EXACTLY why the democrats had to pass Obamacare, the GOP never cared about health insurance and this just proves it!

So you had to spin it to make it sound pallatable. You can keep pounding out your theories from the Libterdial web sites, I am sticking with the facts from the Cathoic web sites. Oh, and by the way, keep in mind, Italy doesn't have to meet the same requirements as "political adds" or "party selection" as in the US, if they say democrats they mean the libterds. Some adds are coming from Mexico so if you think this was fluffed off the shoulder, guess again. In all my years, I have never seen this church up in arms on anything, this time, Obama had a epic fail.

Good your religion doesn't give you special rights that others don't. You should have to pay for it, just like how you have to pay for executions in prisons. But wait...isn't murdering people against your religion also? Where is your outcry to the state over the death penalty using money from Catholics to commit murder?

You two need to get "informed". Both have denied that the GOP is anti contraceptions and this is a "religious" issue. Obama's health care requires that women be covered for contraceptives. Keep in mind, women do NOT conceive without men being involved! Today, Roy Blount (R-MO) wants this part of the health care law repealed! He wants any company who wants to to DENY contraception coverage for women. This denial would only require the companies to say it is against their "personal feelings" regardless of their religion!! This proves that this was NEVER a religious issue-this was and is a woman's health issue! EOW-you want to know which Republicans are fighting the pill-well here you are! Roy Blount and Mitch McConnell agrees with him! Neither one asked that Viagra no longer be covered! Again, any woman who has any self-respect will NOT vote Republican!

Nope, Catholics are fighting the bill period. You do not make laws to violate out religious beliefs. Say what you wish, this lost Obama millions in voters and we will support the roll back of Obamacare now fully. 70 million strong in the US plus our hispanic brothers, he has lost. I have read the rhetoric from the left to defend this action, it can't be defended. Like a bag of hammers tossed off a third story building, its going to hurt when it hits you on the head. Can you read? This bill says NOTHING about religion! It would simply mean that any company who does not want to cover women-can get away with that! This is about women's rights! There were those who did want to give up their slaves either-but the government protected them, now the government is having to do the same thing with women-protect them from the domination of men who would control them!

The administration was SHOCKED into making a compromise... not because religious liberty was esteemed as an important value in itself. The Obama administration hopes that the U.S. bishops will accept its proposed compromise (February 10, 2012). However, while we are still awaiting word from our shepherds, I still have serious reservations. The administration was shocked that even liberal Catholic voices were joining the chorus in deploring the initial policy as encroachment upon religious liberty. It was certain that there would be no movement of the Obama Whitehouse away from the giving women free access to contraception. But as Republicans picked up on the issue, election strategists urged an immediate counter-strategy. The offer of a year of grace was insufficient. Is this the best for which we can hope? Might this merely be a ploy to defuse the situation while really changing very little? Catholic parishes, schools, charities, and hospitals should not be forced to provide birth control to employees since such would violate Catholic teaching against artificial contraception. That is the bottom line! And thus, Obama will not win re-election in 2012 with the loss of over 70 million US voters. They won't vote against Obama, they will not vote period.

Roe vs Wade did not "create" abortions. Abortion existed long before that. The difference was the 1%-white, wealthy women had their "DNC'S" in a clean hospital by "discreet" doctors! It was the other women who died or were mangled in dark, dirty back rooms. Don't think for one minute that repealing it would stop them. The same "privileged" would continue with their hypocritical lives! So, get off your self-righteous soap boxes and quit pointing your fingers!

You are so correct.....thousands of yound women got alley and back room abortions in this country before Roe verus Wade. Many were left without being able to bare children, some had severe medical problems and other died from those abortions. It was the young teenage women that paid the price for laws to get changed so the upper crust of society could legaly get done what they had been doing for years.

I am not a Catholic! I am a Protestant and I resent that these men, who are asking to lead ALL Americans think that defending the Catholic church is the same as defending our government! Our fore fathers came here to escape a government recognized church from telling them what to believe and how to worship. Now, the GOP tells me that my government and my tax money is supposed to support the Pope? Excuse me? In the US alone, the Catholic church spent Billions protecting men who had abused children and they have the nerve to scream about birth control? You people continue to defend them-I won't and I don't want one dime of my tax money going to support their money-making hospital or schools! Non-profit my foot! When did the GOP tell anyone that our government and our tax money is supposed to support the Pope? I missed that memo. We are NOT defending Catholics, we are defending our FREEDOM from government. Our fore fathers where very clear in that they did not want our government to EVER have the power to control our lives. This has nothing to do with birth control, it has everything to do with government control.
