New Research: Atkins-Type Diets Harmful For Women

Low-carb, high protein diets are becoming increasingly popular. New evidence reveals that they may cause health problems in women.

A study of over 40,000 Swedish women found those who regularly ate an Atkins-type diet were 28 percent more likely to develop cardiovascular disease than those who did not. Researchers say the actual numbers are small, but still concerning because so many young women are exposed to these diets.

It's unclear whether short term low-carb, high protein diets are harmful. Experts say women should stick with plant based proteins and not cut out complex carbohydrates like fruits and vegetables.
