Mental Hospital Fined For Worker Safety Violations

State workplace safety regulators have fined a government-run mental hospital in Goldsboro over a series of injuries to employees that involved patients.

The North Carolina Department of Labor issued $15,300 in fines against Cherry Hospital earlier this month. At least eight employees were injured this year when they were either attacked by patients or attempting to intervene in fights.

The agency's report cited the hospital with serious violations of workplace safety regulations, as well as the failure of administrators to report some employee injuries to regulators.

North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services spokeswoman Julie Henry said Cherry administrators are reviewing the findings, but that the agency disagrees with the violations and will appeal. She also says progress has been made to increase training.
