Lab Results: Salmonella Came From NC Tempeh

Lab results have confirmed that some packages of unpasteurized soybean tempeh from a North Carolina company were contaminated with salmonella.

Earlier this month, Smiling Hara Tempeh voluntarily recalled packages of the meat substitute made between Jan. 11 and April 11 and marked with a best-by date of July 11 through October 25.

Officials said the salmonella strain has symptoms that can be severe but not as bad as had been initially feared.

Health officials say at least 46 cases have been reported in the Carolinas, Georgia, New York and Tennessee. Seven people being hospitalized.
