Insurers Must Cover Birth Control With No Copays

It's part of a big expansion of coverage for women's preventive care under President Barack Obama's health care law.

The administration says health insurance plans will have to cover birth control as preventive care -- and there can be no copays.

Also to be covered without copays are breast pumps for nursing mothers, an annual "well woman" physical, and screening for the virus that causes cervical cancer and for diabetes during pregnancy. And, plans will have to cover counseling on domestic violence, as well as other services.

The requirements will take effect in January of 2013 in most cases. They're expected to eventually apply to most employer-based plans, and to coverage purchased individually.

The move reflects a near-unanimous recommendation last month from a panel of experts.

As recently as the 1990s, many health insurance plans didn't cover birth control. Today, almost all plans cover prescription contraceptives, with varying co-pays.

The cost of the new coverage will be spread among people with health insurance, resulting in slightly higher premiums. It could be offset somewhat with savings from diseases prevented or from pregnancies that are planned.

How about we sterilize men with more than two children born out of wedlock. We'll say with the first, you were young, didn't know any better, you want to do the right thing, by the second, you just need someone to step in and take care of that little problem for you. Women shoulder all of the responsibility and it's time that someone puts these professional johnny appleseeds out of business.

So I get this straight. Women won't have a copay but everyones premiums will go up. So in essences, everyone including women will pay more for this insurance than they do now. How wonderful is Obamacare? Again, the burden will fall on the taxpayers. God, I hope we get a new president next election.

as it is with everything in Obamacare this will not be free. Someone has to pay for it and it will be everyone who has insurance. Our rate will go up even if we don't use this option.

Carefule qho you pick ladies, the reason why the dads don't get bashed (and they should) is becasue you picked the man and it is your responsibility to make sure you don't get pregnant. If you have an "accident" there is always the morning after pill.

I was trying to MAKE sure I didn't get Pregnant. I took my pill everyday. I love my daughter very much. Just because you get pregnant doesnt mean you should get BASHED for being UNWED. Wake up its 2011........ You don't have to be WED to have a child. It doesn't make you a bad person to be an UNWED mother. It doesn't mean you are AUTOMATICALLY a welfare case!!! My daughters father pays Child support, so I won't bash him. But seriously......... WHY does it ALL fall on the women.... MEN know they can get someone pregnant, just like women KNOW they can get pregnant. Its a TWO WAY STREET.

The women that are causing the problem already can get pills for free. This is just aasualt on our freedoms by The Chosen One. Do you really think these companies will give away the pills and take that revenue loss? No, they will make it up elsewhere.

There is info on the old sterilization program going to pay 20,000 or more to the ones who was sterilized along time ago for their pain. What pain? Define pain as it reflects to this. they need to have never stopped as far as I am concerned. Pay me 20,000 for the pain of reading these stories please. I had also heard years ago that Walmarts employees health plan did not pay for anything like birth control, sterilizations, etc. If they are self funded then I guess they can get away with anything.

Pain is never being able to hold and love your own baby because some holier than thou person deemed you unfit to do so.

How does the old saying go "If the shoe fits.....". As sad as it may sound, there are many people unfit to have kids.

How can you feel for something you never had? I guess we all have pain and ought to collect from someone. I guess I have pain because I won't know what its like for the world to live in peace, have money in the bank, etc so on and so forth. Who knows if they where able to have children to begin with, has anyone ever thought about that, probably not. Its one way or no way.
