GA Man Survives Lightning Strike That Knocked Him Out Of His Shoes

(WXIA) A Newnan, Georgia man is thankful to be alive after literally being blown out of his boots by lightning on Saturday afternoon.

Sean O'Connor was in his front yard Saturday during what he described as a sunny day. It started to sprinkle and as he reached for the rake, he says heard a loud noise.

"I thought it was a tree limb falling, but moments later I found myself across the driveway on the ground," said O'Connor.

The lightning strike blew him out of his work boots. When he looked back at them they were still smoldering.

"That's where the doctors believe the lightning bolt actually entered my body. They believe it was a direct strike," said O'Connor.

He's definitely going to need a new pair of work boots. His current pair is charred. The right shoe has a hole in the toe where the leather disintegrated.

It was O'Connor's wife who insisted he go to the hospital, where doctors were just as amazed that he had survived.

"At first they didn't believe me, but when I showed them the singed hair on my legs and the boots they all wanted to shake my hand. They said they'd never met someone who lived after being struck by lightning," said O'Connor.

Now back at home, O'Connor says he's being asked by friends and family if he's gained any super powers.

"I wish, but my sister did bring me a Flash Gordon t-shirt with a lightning bolt on it," quipped O'Connor.

That's definitely the only kind of lightning bolt he wants to see from now on.

"I think the next time I get ready to come out to do yard work, I'm definitely going to take a closer look at the forecast," said O'Connor.

According to NOAA, the chance of being struck by lightning in any given year is one in 775,000. In a lifetime, the chance is 1 in 10,000. If you have survived a lightning strike, the chances of it happening again is one in 360 billion.

Fishermen are struck by lightning more than any other group.
