Bats Seen In NC Shelter; 11 People Get Vaccinations

Eleven people must get rabies vaccinations and 15 dogs will be quarantined for six months after bats were found in a former gym in Edenton that was used as an animal shelter during Hurricane Irene.

The former D.F. Walker Elementary School was used as an animal shelter for two nights as the storm passed through North Carolina. Jerry Parks of Albemarle Regional Health Services says 11 people stayed in the gym with 30 dogs and five cats.

No one is aware of being bitten by bats that were seen flying around. But Parks says that could have happened without anyone noticing as the people and pets slept. Bats are considered a high risk for rabies.

The 15 dogs that weren't up-to-date on rabies vaccinations will be quarantined for six months.
