HPV Screening: New Test May Detect Cancers Earlier

DNA testing can detect cervical lesions that lead to cancer, but has also been linked to more false positives.

In a new study, Italian researchers compared the two screening methods. They found those who underwent HPV DNA testing were less likely to be diagnosed with cervical cancer at a late stage.

Young women who underwent DNA testing were more likely to be treated for lesions that would have gone away on their own, so researchers say the test should be used in women age 35 and older.
