"Musty" Water

Officials in a southeastern North Carolina county say the water is safe to drink, although residents are complaining about a "musty" taste.

The Star-News of Wilmington reported Thursday that the Brunswick County public utilities director says testing shows the water is safe. Jerry Pierce says he thinks the taste is related to an increase in algae in the Cape Fear River, the county's water source.

The agency has gotten many call about the water since Monday.

The situation is affecting flow from a plant that serves about 22,000 customers from the Leland area to Sunset Beach. Pierce says the plant treats water with chlorine dioxide that produces a chemical reaction that may cause a strange taste and smell.

Pierce hopes to clear up the problem in the next few days by using a filtering material.

If the odor is "musty" it is unlikely a reaction of chlorine dioxide. More likely a naturally occuring chemical such as geosmin, from algae. Experts are Professor Robert Hoehn et al at VA Tech (blacksburgh, VA). Ps- chlorine dioxide is far safer than chlorine, and has been used to disinfect water in the US for more than 60 years. Sure beats cholera!

Chlorine dioxide doesn't sound like something I would want to ingest. Sounds like Leland should take some of DMB's advice and "Don't drink the water!" ugh, nasty!!!

More chemicals in the water that are "okay" to drink. I bet these officials wouldn't let their kids or family drink it
