Heart Institute Open Meets Slight Delay

The East Carolina Heart Institute at Pitt County Memorial Hospital was scheduled to open Monday. However, officials tell WITN a hot water issue in parts of the center is delaying the planned opening.

Officials expect the problem to be corrected soon.

The $220 million heart institute includes a six-story patient bed tower at the hospital and a research, education and outpatient care facility at ECU. The facility at ECU opened in September, but the hospital portion gets going this month.

Also at the hospital in Greenville, new parking spots open up Monday. 350 more parking spaces will open in a new lot in front of the main hospital and heart institute. It will connect with the existing patient lot, but the cashier booths will be moved.

The Heart Institute will not only be good for Pitt County but surrounding counties as well, not just for the job opportunities but for the opportunity to be healed and lead a normal life after heart problems.

The House that Randolph built. What a legacy Dr. Chitwood will leave. It has never been about making money for him, he could have written his own ticket anywhere in the world. It was about helping patients with heart disease. Congratulations Dr. Chitwood, you finally got what you've waited so long for.
