Brand Name Drugs vs. Generic Drugs

Heart disease patients may be able to save money by switching to generic drugs.

In a new study researchers from Harvard Medical School analyzed data from clinical trials that tested the effectiveness of both brand and generic drugs. For nearly every drug class tested, including beta blockers and the blood thinner Warfarin, the generic drug was clinically equivalent to the brand-name drug. However, editorial articles written during the study period were mostly against substituting for generics.

Experts say physicians' worries or ties to drug companies may have played a role. Experts also say it is reasonable for doctors and patients to trust the FDA bioequivalence rating for generic drugs.
