American Kids Are Receiving More Medications

Children in America are significantly more medicated than kids in other countries.

Researchers from the University of Maryland studied prescription levels in the U.S., Germany and the Netherlands. They found children in the U.S. were three times more likely to be prescribed antidepressants or stimulants, and nearly two times more likely to be given anti-psychotic medication.

Experts say different disease diagnostic systems may account for more medication use in the U.S., however drug advertising and the therapeutic mentality of Americans may also play role.

I agree, lack of discipline does have very much to do with it. I have seen more children directing the adults than adults directing their children. Parents letting their kids hit them and call them names while they stand there crying, it’s so sad. If I let my children treat me that way I would put my kids on medication too, and I would also get myself some. No wonder the world is going haywire, they let the kids rule the house holds.

And now we have a generation of children who have learned to solve problems by popping a pill. Great nation, strong force of drugged up future adults....glad I won't be around to see what type of problems this leads to but I guarantee we will no longer be the force to contend with that we see ourselves as now amongst world powers.

Some of the blame definitely can be laid at the doctor's feet, but in their defense, the so called patient can be rather insistent that they get some sort of medication. 75% of them would probably be served well with placebos. The doctors do hold some culpability, but like Steve said; we can "just say no". Most of all, you can discipline your children and BE A PARENT instead of insisting that he/she has some sort of mental disorder, when all it really a lack of discipline. PERIOD. Parents today are lazy, they would rather have them diagnosed with some B.S. mental disorder and dope them up than to discipline them and raise them. They simply don't want to deal with it, even though they are the ones that brought them into this world. End of Story.

I agree Biker, The DR's seem to want to push pills. It's rare for a dr to tell you that you are just fine, "have a nice day" It's up to you the patient to "just say no"

Think kick backs from pharmicutical companies to Dr's who prescribe their medications may also play a role in this? I go to the Dr for regular checkups every six months and the Dr's are always wanting to prescribe me something for whatever reason. I've changed Dr's three times because of this and each one wants to put me on some kind ( Seems almost any kind ) of medicine. Funny thing is neither Dr has ever prescribed the same medication for the same problem. My blood pressures fine, Cholesterol Ok, I sleep alright, yet they are always willing to prescribe something. Seems like alot of people I know are alright until they start taking these prescribed meds, and then they act like they're falling to pieces. Yep, I think kick backs may play a part. Anybody agree?

Just another testament to the sad state of affairs this nation is in. Because in most cases parents have taken their children to a doctor because they have no earthly idea how to be a parent, had he/she diagnosed as ADD, ADHD, or whatever else they can come up with, when a good 'ole fashioned tale whipping would do just fine. What is the other one that is so widely diagnosed? Oh yeah...Bi-Polar....just code for I am not responsible for controlling my anger or my actions and everyone will just have to put up with me. Another load of complete crap! 35 years ago this crap didn't exist, now everybody and their brother has been diagnosed with some sort of mental disorder. Everyone is medicated for something that is behavior related. Morons, we are a bunch of complete morons running around medicated to oblivion not responsible for our actions. No wonder our country is going straight down the s-----r!
