Officials at a North Carolina hospital say newborn twins who weighed a combined 23 pounds, 1 ounce aren't record-breakers, but may be close.
Forsyth Medical Center spokeswoman Freda Springs said Friday the twins were delivered Tuesday at the hospital's Sara Lee Center for Women's Health in Winston-Salem.
Sean William Maynard weighed 10 pounds, 14 ounces and Abigail Rose Maynard weighed 12 pounds, 3 ounces. Springs said both infants are in excellent condition. Their parents are Joey and Erin Maynard of Winston-Salem.
The twins' combined weight is about four pounds less that the combined weight of twins born in Arkansas in 1927. Those twins weighed a combined 27 pounds, 12 ounces, which hospital researchers said seemed to be the heaviest recorded birth weight for twins since 1900.
