Autism Awareness Day

Each day, two children in North Carolina are diagnosed with autism, and to help spread more awareness, today has been dedicated to autistic children.

This is the first world autism awareness day, adopted last year by the United Nations. It's meant to increase awareness of autism, a complex brain disorder affecting millions of people and families around the world. One in 150 American children is diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders and right now there are over 50,000 children diagnosed here in North Carolina.

As a parent of a 4 year old boy with Autism I am fully aware of the seriousness of this disorder. I wish more of the general public were more understanding of this condition and the effects it has not only on the person with it but their families as well.We are very lucky that our son is high functioning but it is a constant daily struggle for our family to maintain a normal life , especialy for our other 2 children who are 6 & 8. More community awareness needs to take place so that people who are not associated with this disorder can appreciate what a BLESSING it is to have a healthy family.People do not need to judge the actions of a child before they really know or understand what causes certain outburst or misbehavior that is associated with this disorder.Just because a person does not have any obvious outward signs it does not mean they are not challenged with a lifelong illness that changes lives.
