Doctors Could Detect Risks For Alcohol Dependence

Doctors may one day be able to tell if you are at risk for an alcohol problem by looking at your genes.

Researchers at New York University studied mice who were genetically the same except for their preference for alcohol. They were able to identify a gene variant that caused mice to consume more alcohol.

They hope to use this information to develop new drugs to treat alcohol dependence.

The gene is called Grm7.
