Researchers: Pneumococcal Vaccine Paying Off

Vaccinating young children with the pneumococcal vaccine is paying off. Researchers are reporting fewer pneumonia-related hospitalizations and reduced health care expenses.

Two million children around the world die from pneumonia each year, mainly in developing countries.

Since the vaccine's introduction to American children in the year 2000, researchers say the rates of pneumonia-related hospitalizations and doctor visits have declined by about half.

The pneumococcal vaccine is recommended for all children between the ages of 2 months and 2 years. It is also recommended for those at high risk up to age 5.
