New Study Says Nicotine Can Help Alcoholics In Early Stages Of Recovery

Nicotine may help some alcoholics overcome the typical cognitive problems they often face in the early stages of recovery.

Those issues can include attention, learning and memory problems. Researchers are not encouraging recovering alcoholics to start smoking... rather, they say nicotine patches might be an option.

In the new study, alcoholics with a history of smoking benefited from additional doses of nicotine.

Researchers say this also shows why it can be difficult for alcoholics to quit smoking.
