A woman was injured after falling into a sewer late last night while walking on a Greenville street.

Greenville Fire/Rescue/EMS says it happened around 10:00 p.m. on Concord Drive. When rescue crews arrived they found the woman standing approximately 5 feet down in a storm drain.

Apparently someone had removed the cast iron grate on the storm drain. The victim was taken to Vidant Medical Center to be treated for her injuries.

Fire crews placed a mattress over the open storm sewer until Greenville Public Works could replace the missing grate.

There is no word on the condition of the woman at this time.

When contacted, Greenville Public Works told a WITN reporter that they knew nothing about the missing grate, nor if they replaced it. But later in the day, Interim City Manager Chris Padgett told us city workers had no role in removing the drain cover and they're investigating who took it.

Those iron grates typically weigh around a hundred pounds and have been known to be a target of thieves in many larger cities.
