Winterville Cracking Down On Transformer Shrubs

If you live in Winterville and have shrubbery or fences surrounding those green electrical boxes in your yards, you might want to remove them soon.

The town recently sent out notices to homeowners that they have until the end of February to remove obstructions to their electrical transformers, or they'll be removed and thrown away.

Many property owners have planted shrubs or bushes to hide the transformers, even though the town says they are marked with decals that tell property owners that obstructions must be 10 feet away from sides with doors, and three feet from the other sides.

The town says the shrubs need to be removed because they will be conducting maintenance on the transformers in the coming months. Residents we spoke with today are not very pleased with the town's crackdown.
