Wind, Low Humidity Sparks NWS To Issue Red Flag Warning

High winds and low humidity on Thursday sparked the National Weather Service to warn folks about fire dangers.

The NWS issued a Red Flag warning. It expired at 6 p.m.

The NWS recommended that people did not burn across Eastern Carolina, except for those in Hyde County.

The Forest Service was on standby during the warning that began at 11:00 a.m.

Craven County Fire Ranger Greg Riggs said, "We've put equipment in place all over the district, which encompasses eight surrounding counties of Craven. We're anticipating for a bad fire and we're ready to go."

Riggs said most people do heed these warnings. Sometimes fires started the day before can rekindle and cause a fire to spread quickly.

Winds gusted up to 30 miles per hour on Thursday, and relative humidity was at 15 percent.
