At first, detectives thought a knife fight killed two local men. Then the investigation took a turn and one victim's wife was charged with murder. Now, she is preparing to going on trial.

In July, Robert Shellhammer IV and Christopher Stewart died after being stabbed in the neck, according to a medical examiner's report.

Initially, detectives said it appeared the pair killed each other at North Topsail Beach.

In September, the then 19-year-old Bekka Shellhammer, Robert's wife, was arrested for killing Stewart.

The Jacksonville Daily News reports she plead not guilty to that charge on Tuesday.

The District Attorney's office told WITN at the woman's first court appearance months ago that the death penalty is off the table in her case.

Shellhammer's next court date is December 2nd, according to reports.

Online jail records show the 20-year-old is still in custody of the Onslow County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies and North Topsail Beach police have been investigating the deaths and yesterday they presented evidence to District Attorney Ernie Lee who agreed there was enough evidence to charge the woman with murder.
