Wheel Boots Back In Elizabeth City, First Time In 24 Years

Elizabeth City police plan to blow the dust off the city's only wheel boot to try to deal with the growing problem of unpaid parking tickets.

The Virginian-Pilot of Norfolk, Virginia, reported that the city has almost 1,300 delinquent citations with fines totaling about $14,000.

The city last used the wheel boot 24 years ago, in 1989, when it was new.

Ticket fines in Elizabeth City are $10 for exceeding the two-hour limit, $15 for blocking a loading zone and $50 for filling a handicap spot.

Officer Carethia Brown says the driver most likely to get the wheel boot first is a man who drives a Lincoln registered to his grandmother in New York. Brown says the man has 21 unpaid tickets.
