The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office says an argument between brothers turned deadly on Saturday.
Authorities say Saturday at approximately 11:39a.m., Deputies of the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of shots fired and possibly a person shot at 2572 New Hope Road, LaGrange
They say deputies arrived at the scene within 7 minutes and found a subject deceased in the yard of the home. Authorities say a witness was there and cooperated with the authorities. It was reported that while driving down the road an argument occurred between the victim, 28-year-old Richard Sylvester Thomas, of 511 N. Queen Street, Kinston, and the suspect, 34-year-old Benjamin Adonis Thomas of the same address.
They say according to the witness the car stopped at the driver’s home where the argument continued, and the suspect shot the victim. Lawmen report the victim then got out of the car, walked a few steps and collapsed and the suspect left walking toward Lenoir County, while the witness contacted authorities.
They say shortly after the arrival of the Deputies they were contacted by Deputies of the Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office. The Lenoir County Deputy informed the Wayne County Deputy that they had someone in custody that they believed may be the suspect. Lenoir County transported the suspect back to the scene and turned him over to Wayne County. He was reportedly located walking down the road inside Lenoir County. They say detectives arrived at the scene and continued the investigation. The weapon was later recovered on the side of a ditch on Old Jason Road, in Wayne County.
Authorities say the suspect and the victim are brothers.
Benjamin Thomas was charged with one count of Murder.
He is being held in the Wayne County Detention Center under no bond.
