Washington Man Charged With Arson After Abandoned Home Burns

Deputies have made an arrest in a weekend fire at an abandoned home in Beaufort County.

James Atkins III of Washington is charged with second degree arson, felony breaking and entering and possession of an open container.

Deputies say last Saturday night while in his personal vehicle, a narcotics investigator spotted a suspicious vehicle parked at an abandoned home on Yeatesville Road. After calling the Sheriff's Office, he drove home to get his department vehicle and responded back to investigate. In the meantime, 911 got a call about a fire at the home.

The investigator spotted the suspicious vehicle and pulled it over. Both people denied being at the abandoned home, but later the passenger admitted to setting the fire.

Atkins was jailed on a $20,500 bond.
