UPDATE: Police Still Searching For Gunman, UNCW Lockdown Over

WITN spoke with UNCW Chief of Police David Donaldson Tuesday, and he says the campus is still on alert as police continue to search for an armed robber.

Chief Donaldson says the campus is no longer on lockdown and students are free to move about, but should do so with caution. Classes will start at normal hours Tuesday.

Extra security is in place as police work to locate a man who they say stole a wallet and two cell phones Monday night. The man is described as a light-skinned male who weighs about 250 lbs. Police say he approached a girl at a Hardee's parking lot on College Rd., which is adjacent to campus. The victim told police the thief was very polite and thanked her and another person inside the car for being so cooperative.

Police used a helicopter and K-9 unit to locate the man overnight. The K-9 unit led police to the UNCW campus, which is where the search will continue Tuesday morning. Chief Donaldson says there are a number of promising leads that they are responding to.

Students are asked to monitor their phones, the UNCW homepage, www.uncw.edu/alert and the Emergency Information Hotline at (910) 962-3991 or (888) 657-5751. We will keep you posted as more updates come in.
