Three Candidates File For New Bern Mayor

Three candidates have file to replace Lee Bettis as mayor of New Bern.

Bettis announced earlier this year he would not run for re-election. This past spring he was charged with DWI.

New Bern's Mayor Pro Tem is among those running.

Sabrina Bengel filed as a candidate Monday morning at the board of elections office.

Bengel says, "As mayor I will continue to represent this city with integrity and an unyielding commitment to its continued success and growth."

Also running for mayor is fellow Alderman Dana Outlaw.

Outlaw has served as alderman of the 6th ward since 2005.

Outlaw graduated from East Carolina University.

He is involved in a self-storage and real estate consulting and appraisal business in New Bern.

Edwin Vargas is also running for mayor, his first bid for public office. The 55-year-old Navy veteran currently works as a civilian employee at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point. Vargas says his focus is on financial improvements the city could make. His background is in accounting, finance and planned property.

When Bettis was arrested for driving while impaired in Havelock he said he blew a 0.0 on the breathalyzer test but failed a field sobriety test. He said a recent hip surgery caused him to fail the test. A blood sample was taken and sent to Raleigh for analysis. Those results have not been disclosed yet.
