Tuesday's Rain Eases Drought Conditions

After a doozy of a rainstorm Tuesday, eastern Carolina soils are saturated and swamps are full of standing water. Not ten days prior, many areas in the east were in danger of drought conditions, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Greene, Wayne, Wilson, Nash, Edgecombe and Halifax counties along with parts of Pitt, Duplin, Lenoir and Northampton counties were categorized as being abnormally dry, indicating a chance of drought during the summer. But then the rain came and drowned out the talks of drought. Nearly an inch of rain fell over 24 hours on Tuesday, with some areas getting well over an inch. Here are some of the rainfall totals:

Greenville - 1.00”
Edenton - 1.06”
Jacksonville - 1.20”
Cape Hatteras - 1.25”

Tuesday’s rain has put us back on track for a drought-free year. Long range forecasting models are also suggesting we will finish Spring with a near average rainfall total, which bodes well for farmers in the region with the summer planting season less than two months away.
