Four Sentenced To Prison After Child Thrown Off Roof

Four people are headed to prison after a four-year-old girl was thrown from a roof and struck the side of a swimming pool in Beaufort County in July 2011.

Megan Woolard was sentenced to a minimum of 16 months and maximum of 20 months, Emmanuel Ruffin was sentenced from 17 to 30 months, Camelia Cartwright was sentenced from 17 to 30 months and Brandon Wooland was sentenced from 19 to 23 months.

It happened at a home on Terrapin Track Road. The child was thrown from the roof of a mobile home towards an above-ground pool and struck the side of the pool.

According to the District Attorney's office, "Megan and Brandon Woolard were on top of the roof. The evidence was that Megan helped the child get on the roof; Brandon is the one who actually threw her. Cartwright and Ruffin were like family to the child, who was in their care on this occasion and were standing outside the mobile home and near the pool when this occurred."

In addressing the court Wednesday, District Attorney Seth Edwards said there were two separate but related incidents that led to the child’s injuries.

“We have the act of putting a four year old on the roof and attempting to throw her in the pool; and we have the act of covering up what happened and lying to the medical personnel,” Edwards said.

Edwards said any of the four could have easily prevented the incident from happening, but none of them did.

The child had internal injuries and spent 22 days in the intensive care unit at the hospital in Greenville.

Edwards said the child's kidney was split in half, and that the medical bills up to this point exceed $1.5 million.

According to the District Attorney's office, Judge W. Russell Duke also recorded a civil judgment against each defendant for the $1.5 million.

Danielle Kraft, the mother of the girl, told the judge Wednesday the doctors said her child might not make it out of the hospital alive and described the scar on her daughter's stomach.

“A year out of their lives is a small price to pay for what they did to my daughter’s life,” Kraft said.

Over 200 comments and I can count on one hand the number of them that questioned how the child was doing, how recovery was going etc. Just comment after comment blasting those that are allegedly (innocent until proven guilty) responsible. Interesting.

Bless this little one with a full and soon recovery. I don't know this child but as a mom, I can only imagine what this family is going through. Kiss her, love her, and assure her that she is going to be just fine.

Nobody will ever know what happened but the three people charged. None of them deserve to be called "Adult". They are very immature and lack any sense at all. Adults make bad decisions sometimes but there is no excuse for this kind of action. NONE of the children in the Cartwright family can stay out of trouble. They are of age but definitly minds of children. The Woolard's need help! I hope all three get what they deserve. I'm praying for recovery of this little girl.Get well soon.

Ex-Family Member... thank God for people like you. Sometimes a child's only hope is someone "on the outside" who can let authorities know the truth that has been covered up by the people who exploit, abuse, or neglect a child in their care. Jazmine is a child in peril and needs an advocate.

I wish I could tell the whole world the truth of how this family is. The Cartwrights are always trying to blame someone else for why they do the things they do. They come across as sweet, outgoing, & loving. As long as you do what they want, they are these things. Thank goodness I am no longer within their dysfunctional, drama, and crazy filled family.

At least one of the 3 had to be involved, unless you believe the little girl climbed on the roof and jumped on her own. Also, it saddens me how often dysfunctional people band together and defend one other after a child in their care gets abused or hurt. It's very reminiscent of the Haleigh Cummings case. The denials, i.e. "I know (so-and-so) and he/she would never do that!" are predictable, sick and infuriating. Birds of a feather deny together.

i know both camille and megan. camille i know didnt have anything to do with this besides prbly trying to stop it. i know her from school and from her working with my children at both the daycares she worked at. she is a good person. megan i really dont have words for. as a mother you are suppose to put your children first. her child should have never been hurt if she was the type of mother she is suppose to be. my prayers are for jazmine and camille.

Hey, N, were you there? Then you don't know if Camille had anything to do with it or not. How you are at your job usually doesn't have anything to do with how you are when you're hanging out with your friends. Again, she wouldn't have been charged if they didn't have enough evidence.

And were you there? Then you can't make any comments to anyone else about their own opinions.

Prayers for Jazmine most definitely. Camille could have stopped this but she didn't. Some people could be generally good people but make really bad decisions. In her case, she most definitely made a bad decision and will hopefully have to pay for it. And what does Jazmine's mother have to do with this? She left her child with someone who she trusted and then this happened. Her mother was not even there.

Camille is NOT a good person. She sure has you fooled! This little girl was left in her care and was expected to keep her safe. If she tried to stop it, she should have succeeded. So that being said... She is more responsible for this than anyone else.

Of course it wasn't. Why hurt your own when you can hurt someone elses.
