Three-Year-Old's New, Valentine's Day Heart

A three-year-old Gaston County girl got a real heart to enjoy on Valentine's Day.

The Gaston Gazette reports that Trinity Lazo of Ranlo received a long-awaited heart transplant Thursday and is recuperating from surgery.

Trinity needed the transplant after suffering from dilated cardiomyopathy, a condition that enlarges and weakens the heart. One week ago, a mechanical heart was implanted as a temporary fix.

Late Wednesday night, a heart became available and within hours, physicians in a Cincinnati, Ohio, hospital began surgery on Trinity.

The Lazo family said it didn't know where the heart came from, and that the organ donor is anonymous.

Monica Lazo said her daughter could be awake and alert in a matter of days, but her release from the hospital could take a month or two.
