UPDATE: Two Story Building On Fire In Kinston

Firefighters battled a fire Wednesday evening at a two story apartment building in Kinston.

The building is on Shine Street, near the intersection of Queen Street. City Manager Tony Sears says the apartment building has been vacant for quite some time.

Director of Public Safety Bill Johnson says crews arrived on scene about 5 p.m. and that the blaze has been put out.

Johnson says firefighters initially made their attack through the rear of the building because of heavy smoke out front. Crews then discovered the floor was "burned away," so Johnson says they used ladders to attack the fire from the second story.

In addition to city of Kinston firefighters, additional help was called in from other fire departments in Lenoir County.

Fire officials say no one was injured and that the investigation is ongoing.
