The owner of a convenience store broken into less than a week ago is speaking out about the arrest of man she says she's known since he was young.

On Friday, 18-year-old Sylvester Lindsey of North Jefferson Street in Fountain was charged with breaking and entering, larceny, and injury to property. The Pitt County Sheriff's Office says that the Fountain Community Store on Highway 258 North was broken into on December 22nd and had several hundred dollars in cash and computer equipment taken.

Store owner Michelle Manning says that betwen $1,000 and $1,500 worth of damage was done to her store that morning. She says that the suspect stole all of her security cameras and attempted to destroy all of her computers connected to the cameras. According to her, there was a part to one computer that the suspect didn't take, however, and that allowed Manning to identify the thief as Sylvester Lindsey, someone she was surprised to recognize from the Fountain community.
"I knew he had been raised up in church and his mama did a real good job raising him, but you know, once they get a certain age, there's nothing you can do with them," said Manning.

She also detailed the vandalism that took place, commenting that the thief sprayed "ketchup, hot sauce and vinegar all over everything." In addition to stealing the computer equipment, Manning also told us that he stole cigarettes, cigars and a few hundred dollars in cash.

Additionally, she spoke to us about the vulnerability she now feels after having her store broken into. "You know you kind of feel invaded, you've been invaded when they come and go through all your stuff. They go through all your drawers, all your cabinets. You know, this is still my little home down here, because I've worked down here 10-15 hours a day. So it's my home and you feel like you've been invaded."

Lindsey is being held on a $30,000 bond at the Pitt County Detention Center.
