New Year Begins With New Greene County Middle School Open

For the first time since a devastating tornado swept through Eastern Carolina on April 16, 2011, middle school students in Greene County get to attend a school building, rather than dozens of modular classrooms.

Teachers said it was difficult to look at the school in ruins following the 2011 storm, but they're very excited to beginning this new year.

The new school was built exactly like the old one, except stronger windows were installed and there were upgrades to the structure that will make it safer for students.

Previous Story

Teachers and faculty at Greene County Middle School are gearing up for a new school year in a brand new building after a tornado destroyed their school two years ago.

Gym teacher James Campbell says, "It displaced us from the building, we were forced into trailers behind our school here. The athletic fields were destroyed, the complete building was a mess."

As students get set to walk into their newer, safer building to start school this Monday, a few can't help but remember what happened back in April of 2011.

Student Conner Herring says, "They say that it should be safer, but anything can happen. Just like 2011 we weren't expecting it. We weren't wanting it to happen. I'm just glad we have a new school where we can go."

Counselors at Greene County Middle School are ready to help with the transition.

School Counselor Latolra Rodgers says, "I'm anticipating that we'll have some students come in on the first day and be a little sad, and there again as counselors we will pull them aside and pep them up, talk to them about, you know, this is going to be a great year. We have new opportunities and we're just going to own our own outcome."

Talking about natural disasters with kids can be tough, but Rodgers says the best thing to do is to prepare students with hurricane and fire drills.

Classes at Greene County Middle School begin Monday.
