The Highway Patrol says that speed and alcohol are suspected in what led to a fatal head-on crash in Wayne County on Saturday.
Trooper Fowler says that it no longer appears that 22-year-old Yobani Palacios of Dudley, was passing a vehicle when it crashed head-on into a Mazda 6, driven by 20-year-old Keith Kurinec. Troopers now believe that Palacios, driving a Chrysler Sebring, crossed the center line while heading south on US-117 Alternate, prompting a vehicle in the north bound lane to swerve out of the way. When that vehicle swerved out of the way, Trooper Fowler believes Kurinec, who was traveling behind, had no time to get out of the way of Palacios path.
We're told that Palacios died at the scene.
Officials say Kurinec sustained serious injuries and was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital. We’re told that 32-year-old Hugo Sosa and a 17-year-old juvenile were passengers in Kurinec’s vehicle. Trooper Fowler says that Sosa is in serious to critical condition at Wayne Memorial Hospital, while the 17-year-old juvenile was airlifted to Vidant Medical Center in Grenville in critical condition.
An autopsy of Palacios is pending.
