WITN's Teacher Of The Week For February 6th, 2013 is Regina Austin, who teaches special education at Riverside High School in the Martin County town of Williamston.
She attended East Carolina University and currently still attends graduate school. She will graduate with her Master's degree soon and will also soon be getting married! Regina began teaching English and then decided to gain additional licenses in Mathematics and Special Education.
This is her third year teaching and her second year teaching special education students. She says she works very hard to make sure her students feel like a part of the regular student body and are not left out or behind. If her students don't have the capacity to read an entire novel, like To Kill a Mockingbird, she says they can at least watch a film version and discuss the plot so they know of and can discuss characters like Boo Radley at lunch or in other classes.
The person who nominated Regina wrote: "…she does an excellent job. She is full of energy and makes learning exciting for these special students. She not only teaches math with great skill but teaches English with great gusto. As with many special ed classes the students cannot read well, but she reads to them the great novels with enthusiasm. She shows how to be a good citizen by being a good role model."
