TEACHER OF THE WEEK: Charlene Knox From Pitt County Schools

Charlene Knox is this week’s Teacher of the Week.

Knox is a teacher in the Helping Us Grow Successfully (HUGS) program at Pitt County Schools. HUGS teachers serve children ages 3-5 who have a diagnosis of autism.

Charlene has been teaching for Pitt County Schools for four years but has worked with individuals with autism for more than 16 years. She received both her Masters degree and Birth-Kindergarten teaching license from ECU. Charlene says working with children with special needs has always been rewarding for her and that she became drawn to this field when her oldest son was born with Down Syndrome.

In addition to teaching children with autism in the school system, Charlene and her husband coach Special Olympics Basketball and Challenger League baseball. She also has another son, who is a great help with those activities.
