Edgecombe County Schools Receive Money From Sweepstakes Convictions

Prosecution of sweepstakes operators has been difficult for district attorneys in the past. Until a recent case in the east resulted in two convictions, possibly the first in the state..

Tarboro Police arrested two people who managed the Past-Times Internet Café in April of 2013.

Edgecombe County's Assistant District Attorney Brooks Frye says the owner, Richard Chapman, as well as the manager, Kwana Spruill, faced misdemeanor charges but asked for a jury trial.

On December 18th, the two were found guilty of operating an illegal gaming business and sentenced to 45 days in jail, which the judge suspended to 36 months of unsupervised probation.

Nine thousand dollars seized from the business went to the Edgecombe County Schools fund.
