Student Charged With Weapon At New Bear Grass Charter School

A student at the new Bear Grass Charter School has been charged with bringing a weapon on campus.

The Martin County Sheriff's Office says it happened around 8:25 a.m. Thursday. They say the school's principal was told by a teacher that 16-year-old Curtis Handy of Williamston threatened to shoot up his first period class.

The principal brought the student to her office and he admitted having a cross bow in his car, according to investigators. Deputies say the teen has been charged with possession of a weapon on school property and communicating threats.

Deputies say they're continuing the investigate the case to ensure the safety of the school.
