A nursing home for North Carolina military veterans, mostly built with money from the federal economic stimulus program, has officially opened in Kinston.

Gov. Beverly Perdue spoke at the grand opening of the State Veterans Home in Kinston, where more elderly veterans can find care. About 760,000 veterans live in North Carolina.

About two-thirds of the cost for it and another 100-bed facility in Swannanoa came from the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

Residents are expected to start moving in after the first of the year.
