Simpson is looking for a new police chief as their current chief continues to recover from a car accident that happened back in August.

Mayor David Boyd says they do not know when John Waters will be able to return to work so they are proceeding to find a new chief. The village has been without a police officer since Waters wrecked his police cruiser on August 25th into a house. It was the chief's second wreck this summer. On July 28th Waters was hospitalized after his vehicle hydroplaned and hit a tree.

Boyd says he and the village board have agreed to start looking for a new chief. The mayor says when Waters is able to return to work there will be a place for him within the department.

When contacted this morning, Waters says he had been demoted to assistant police chief.

Earlier this month, the North Carolina Training and Standards Commission met to decide whether the chief could keep his certification after he shot a man last year. Waters says that board cleared him.
